The Series opening Bird Island Race

The anticipated 2020-2021 Series is about to begin!

The first hit out for the 2020-2021 Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore (Audi Centre Sydney BWPS) will this year be the 85-nautical-mile Bird Island Race. The shortest race of the series will see 37 crews take to the start line for the drag race north to Bird Island and then back to finish in Rushcutters Bay.

Many offshore racers are eager to make their way back out onto the water for the first longer-distance coastal race of the year. With the calendar edging ever closer to December 26, and world-renowned Rolex Sydney Hobart, sailors will be looking to maximise any opportunity to prepare for Boxing Day spectacle.

The highly competitive TP52s will be back once again with six of the grand-prix designed yachts set to do battle. Sean Langman's Moneypenny will look to stretch its legs and push for first over the line with divisional tussles too close to predict.

This 85-nautical-mile sprint will see the first inclusion of the two-handed division in the series. After great participation in its inaugural pointscore during the 2019 season, this race will see James Murchison’s Abracadabra, Jiang Hui Lin’s Min River and Rupert Henry’s Burning Palms be the first two-handed yachts to take on the Audi Centre Sydney BWPS.

The forecast for Saturday’s race is predicted to see a moderate southerly breeze send entrants on their way north, before building mid-afternoon as yachts turn around the island and work their back towards the finish. The tale end of the yachts won’t see any reprieve under the cover of darkness as the breeze is predicted to hold into the evening.
