Record fleet set for 2022 Cabbage Tree Island Race

A record fleet of 72 boats is set to compete in the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s 2022 Cabbage Tree Island Race, which begins at 7pm (AEDT) on Friday 2 December.

The 172 nautical mile race is the penultimate race of the 2022/23 Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore and the opener to the 2022 Australian Maxi Championship.

Most of the Cabbage Tree Island Race fleet is preparing for the 2022 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, with some using the race as a qualifier.

All four 100-foot maxis will race for the first time this year, with Andoo Comanche, Black Jack, Hamilton Island Wild Oats and LawConnect leading the charge for Line Honours.

Sean Langman’s Reichel/Pugh 69 Moneypenny leads the Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore overall standings after four of six races, with podium finishes in all races so far.

There has been some close racing this season between Moneypenny and URM Group, while David Griffith’s JV62 Whisper was fourth behind those two boats in the Bird Island Race last month.

The 2018 Rolex Sydney Hobart winner Alive (Philip Turner’s Reichel/Pugh 66, skippered by Duncan Hine) has headed up from Tasmania to continue her preparations for the Rolex Sydney Hobart.

A strong fleet of 52s includes Celestial, Denali, Gweilo, KOA, Patrice, Quest, Smuggler and Zen.

Crux (Carlos Aydos/Peter Grayson) and Rum Rebellion (Shane Connelly/Tony Sutton) share the lead in the Two-Handed Division of the Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore.

Both will race around Cabbage Tree Island, with 16 two-handed boats entered: Avalanche, Crux, Currawong, Disko Trooper_Contender Sailcloth, Hip-Nautic, Jupiter, KD4, Mistral, Philosopher, Rum Rebellion, Rumchaser, Speedwell, Sun Fast Racing, Transcendence Crento, Tumbleweed and Uprising.

Other notables back in blue water action out of the CYCA include Geoff Hill’s Hong Kong-based Santa Cruz 72 Antipodes, Shane Kearns’ S&S 34 White Bay 6 Azzurro and Paddy and Keith Broughton’s S&S Yawl Kialoa II.

The start of the Cabbage Tree Island Race will be streamed LIVE on the CYCA TV YouTube channel and Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore website from 6.50pm (AEDT) on Friday 2 December 2022.

Gordon Ketelbey's TP52 Zen won the 2021 Cabbage Tree Island Race, while Christian Beck's Juan-K 100 LawConnect won Line Honours.
