First boat has rounded Bass Island and the many of the fleet have past Sydney Heads headed for Bass Island

With clouds clearing and the sun coming out in the early hours of the day, the breeze has dropped and the teams have had to make some tactical decisions to try and make the most of the fickle breeze. Their positioning in the next few hours may make a big difference once the wind starts to settle and build as the morning progresses.

Updates:

  • Comanche has rounded Bass Island headed for Sydney Harbour. She is predicted to be through the finish line at 12:55 which will break the previous record by three hours, set by Matt Allen's Ichi Ban in 2014 of 20 hours 52 minutes and 49 seconds. 
  • The fleet is now spread out on the leg from Newcastle to Bass Island with the leaders of the pack split, Voodoo hugging the coast and the TP52s Ichi Ban, Celestial and Gweilo staying out to sea. 
  • The battle for IRC Overall is heating up with the changes in wind conditions this morning. Many of the mid-sized competitors have been able to make their way to the top of the leader board with Tony Kirby's Patrice sitting in first place, followed by Vice Commodore Noel Cornish's St. Jude and West Australian Anthony Kirke's Enterprise in third.

With many miles still to cover and some tricky wind conditions and transitions to contest with, the race for the Overall Win is still wide open.
