Slow and challenging night as winds drop before reaching Newcastle

news

With the light breezes continuing over the first night of the race, teams slowly edged their way north towards the first turning mark near Newcastle. The further north crews sailed the winds slowly faded proving for some challenging conditions as they tussled for positions before tackling the longest leg of the race to Bass Island.

The initial overall IRC front runners include Celestial, Ichi Ban and newcomer Maverick, with Chinese Whisper holding first on line honours. In PHS Enigma leads with Celestial first in ORCi.

The race has unfortunately sustained some retirements overnight with Occasional Coarse Language Too pulling out of the race due to damage to their mast, as well as initial front runner, No Limit, retiring from the race with structural damage. Local Hero has been the latest retirement as a crew member was injured but has been taken to port and received medical assistance.
